Maya Ubud Resort & Spa Review, Ubud, Bali: A Genuine Bargain In The Jungle

Ubud was once a sleepy backwater part of Bali, and it brought together a very spiritual crowd for yoga and healing. Today, thanks to the area’s popularisation in “Eat, Pray, Love” (both the book and the movie), it’s one of the island’s most sought-after destinations.

There’s no beach in this central island town, but plenty to see and do and a huge number of resorts competing for your business. Many of them are among the most expensive places to stay in Bali.

That’s why our team was pleasantly surprised by the room rate at Maya Ubud; it’s very low for the facilities promised, and they rushed off to enjoy a day or two at the resort. This is what they learned at Maya Ubud Resort & Spa, Bali.

Cleanliness and Maintenance

We found that the overall cleanliness of this resort was very good, and while there were occasional lapses (such as dust behind a fixture), it was nothing that made us wish they’d try harder.

As for maintenance, there are always a few minor issues at this price point, but the hotel is very receptive to feedback, and the staff fix any issues almost immediately after they arise.

Rating:

Sleep Quality

The beds are nice enough, but they are not the ultra-high-end luxury sleeping experiences that would merit top marks in this category.

We would note that they’re OK, though, and with no real outside noise, despite the relatively central location, you will sleep fine.

Rating:

Staff Attitude And Service Culture

Balinese hospitality is legendary, and it’s rare to stay anywhere where the staff aren’t incredibly friendly and determined to do their best for their guests.

And one thing we liked about Maya Ubud, in particular, was that they seemed to be empowered to do their best without referring everything to management.

Rating:

Check-in/Check-out Experience

This isn’t a huge resort, so don’t expect much of a queue at check-in. Overall, the check-in process is efficient and pleasant, and while there is a little effort involved in the process, it’s nothing taxing. You’ll be in your room soon enough.

Rating:

Bathroom Quality & Functionality

The bathrooms are nice, and they’re clean, but they’re a little on the smaller side and quite basic. The toiletries are useful though, and the staff are happy to bring more if you need them.

Rating:

Value For Money

Ubud used to be a very cheap place to stay, and while you can still find hostels and guesthouses in the town, the high-end hotel market here is among the most expensive in Bali.

Given that, we felt that Maya Ubud Resort & Spa punches above its weight when it comes to value for money. This is a very nice place for a reasonable price tag.

Rating:

Food And Beverage Execution

The food and drinks are nice enough, but nothing really stands out. The breakfast feels like a hotel breakfast, for example, rather than something you’d come here to dine on if you weren’t staying in the resort.

Rating:

Location & Immediate Surroundings

This hotel is in an excellent location, it’s on a safe side street away from the hustle and bustle of Ubud, and it’s ideal for exploring locally. It also has a beautiful view from most rooms of the surrounding rainforest and rice fields.

Rating:

Facilities & Amenities Vs Promise

We felt that all the facilities and amenities that the hotel promises in its marketing were present and available, though we didn’t feel that any of them were particularly special in Bali’s competitive hotel environment.

Rating:

Overall “Personality”

This is a very attractive hotel where you can get some nice Instagram shots, and the views over the local countryside are to die for.

However, we don’t think there’s quite enough about this place for it to be engraved in your memory for years to come, either.

Summary: Our Overview Of Maya Ubud Resort & Spa

We liked Maya Ubud Resort & Spa quite a bit. The staff are lovely, and the overall package feels like superb value. We’d be happy to stay here if we were passing through Ubud, but it’s not somewhere we’d stay if we wanted to spend all day, every day in the resort. There’s not quite enough on offer for that.

Total Score:
33/50

Grading: Solid 4-star experience
