Hotel Komune is not in the usual place for a holiday in Bali; it’s on the very edge of the East Coast in Gianyar, tucked away from the crowds and the bustle of much of the rest of the island.

This resort is one of our favourite resorts in Gianyar. It’s also one of the best family resorts in Bali.
Cleanliness and Maintenance
We felt that the cleaning staff did an excellent job but there’s some definite signs of wear and tear on things that, perhaps, the maintenance staff could do something about. It’s not holiday ruining stuff, but you will notice it.
Sleep Quality
The beds are decent, the mattresses are comfortable, and the pillows and linen are comfortable, too. We had no complaints about the airflow in the bedroom, either.
And because you’re out away from all the hustle and bustle, there’s no noise to contend with. You’ll get a great night’s sleep.
Staff Attitude And Service Culture
Balinese staff are built differently, and while they don’t have that polished professionalism of an international chain, the staff here are warm, enthusiastic and caring.
You’ll have an excellent experience dealing with the folks on the ground here.
Check-in/Check-out Experience
The check-in and check-out processes are straightforward enough, and you won’t find yourself standing around for hours at either end of your stay.
They can hold luggage for you post-checkout, but we can’t see why anyone would need this service, as you’re going to have to travel somewhere else, anyway.
Bathroom Quality & Functionality
We felt that the bathrooms were clean, reasonably well-appointed and had decent water pressure. The towels and toiletries were OK, too.
There’s nothing special about the bathrooms, but nothing to detract from your holiday either.
Value For Money
We think Hotel Komune represents above-average value for money, though its location certainly helps with that, as you get more than you would for a similar amount in a more popular location like Canggu.
The trade-off, of course, is that you will need to rely more on the hotel as there’s not much else around.
Food And Beverage Execution
The food and beverage offerings are decent enough; they are fresh and well-made, with tasty ingredients that have been mainly locally sourced.
But if there were more choices of dining options in the area, we doubt you’d choose to eat here every night of a week-long stay, either.
Location & Immediate Surroundings
It’s a beautiful spot with a legendary surf break to take advantage of, but it’s also very remote from most other sites on the island.
That means you’re going to need transportation to explore much further, and you may also want to be a little careful of stray dogs, though otherwise the area is very safe.
Facilities & Amenities Vs Promise
Because Hotel Komune is a bit off the beaten path, they need to ensure that there’s enough on hand to keep their guests engaged.
And they do a very good job of things, no, the condition of everything isn’t perfect, but it is very good, and you get a lot of bang for your buck here.
Overall “Personality”
The big draw here is not so much the hotel but the Keramas Surf Break, which is one of Bali’s most famous breaks, and it provides a lovely backdrop for your holiday.
However, the hotel is perfectly pleasant, and you’ll have an enjoyable time here; we just don’t think you’ll remember much about Hotel Komune in a decade’s time.

Hotel Komune is a great value stay, away from the main beach towns, and you get a lot of value for money by choosing somewhere where the other tourists don’t go.
However, the flip side is that you are kind of stuck with the facilities at Hotel Komune, so you might opt for a shorter stay if you think that you might get bored.

Hotel Komune is a great local resort with plenty of facilities for a really nice family break without spending a small fortune.
The on-site kids’ club is great for active children, and there are enough dining options to keep you happy.
So, we’d be happy to recommend this place to anyone interested in it, but with the note that it’s quite far from anywhere else, so you’ll need transportation if you want to explore beyond the resort.
