Cleanliness and Maintenance
We moved things around and tried to find a spot that the cleaning team had missed, but we really couldn’t; they do great work.
The maintenance team also operates to high standards, but this is an older resort now, and there are small signs of wear and tear appearing.
Sleep Quality
We slept babies at Kastara Resort and Spa thanks to the big bed, which was designed for comfort with first-rate mattresses, bedding and pillows.
Most importantly, there was no noise in the room from outside, and the blackout curtains functioned perfectly. It’s a great place for a lie-in.
Staff Attitude And Service Culture
It’s rare to find a 5-star resort in Bali where the staff aren’t at the top of their game, and we didn’t catch anyone out here, either.
The staff are warm, friendly and professional with a genuine intent on delivering a first-rate customer experience, and they have the authority to make things happen when needed.
Check-in/Check-out Experience
Checking in and out is easy enough; this isn’t the biggest resort, so unless you are incredibly unlucky, you’ll probably be the only ones checking in at any given moment.
They will store luggage, at your own risk, after you check out, if you want to spend a little more time wandering around Ubud before you move on.
Bathroom Quality & Functionality
The bathrooms are very good, and while they did supply some slightly dirty towels, this was swiftly rectified when we pointed it out.
The supplied toiletries and towels are lovely, and there’s plenty of hot water and decent water pressure.
Value For Money
We felt that this resort was very good value for money; it has a lot of charm that really stays with you after your visit, though it’s a little short on facilities.
With a bit of effort, they could raise this grade to excellent by taking care of some of the smaller details.
Food And Beverage Execution
The food is perfectly OK and reasonably priced, but we have to acknowledge that we don’t think we’d come to this restaurant if we weren’t staying in the hotel.
The good news is that in Ubud, there are a lot of alternative options and you have cafes, warungs and fine dining restaurants galore to choose from.
Location & Immediate Surroundings
Ubud is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Bali, and that’s because it has so much to offer, from art markets to palaces to waterfalls and so on…
There is a downside, though, because all that popularity can lead to some very busy attractions at times, and the traffic can be murder.
Facilities & Amenities Vs Promise
We felt that the facilities were as advertised and all of them were in very good condition, but we also felt that there could have been a few more of them.
If you’re looking for a resort to hole up in for a week or more, this isn’t going to keep you entertained for that long.
Overall “Personality”
The thing that Kastara Resort excels at is being Balinese. We can’t think of another resort that quite typifies the island’s vibe more than this one.
Every touch has that sweet and slightly naive feel that brings people back to Bali again and again. You’ll be raving about this place for years to come.

Yes, the Kastara Resort and Spa is family-friendly. They treat children 16 and above as adults for billing purposes, though.
You can get a cot for free for the little ones, but if you want an extra bed, that’s 726,000 IDR per night (roughly $50 USD or $73 AUD).
There is a kids’ menu at the restaurant, but otherwise, there are no child-specific facilities at this hotel, which means it’s probably better for older children.

On top of that, they get everything else right. This is a genuinely luxurious resort where you can enjoy being pampered and spoiled rotten.
There’s absolutely nothing that should put you off booking a room here if you’re thinking about staying in Ubud in style.
